Public Operations

Change the Balance will be publically marketed as offering consumers methods through which they may donate the balance remaining on gift card to a charity of their choice. These methods may include:

  • A web donation portal
  • Free standing donation kiosks
  • Mail or organized collection drives
  • Integrated donation options in retailer point of sale systems

Behind the Scenes

In many cases, the balance that remains on a gift card is technically speaking not a consumer’s. Referred to as “breakage,” this balance is in fact income for the issuing retailer once they are able to claim the revenue to their bottom line.

The challenge for retailers to determine when it is to determine when it is appropriate to turn the liability into sales and not be surprised by redemptions later.

Retailer Relationships

Through strategic relationships established with retailers, and a transactional model that assumes only a modest percentage of the breakage will be donated, Change the Balance will not only have the potential to generate millions of dollars for charity, but will be able to bring considerable value to retailers.

Value Delivered to Retailers

  • Ability to claim breakage to their bottom line sooner and to higher degrees by increased gift card redemptions
  • Tax benefits for the percentage of breakage donated through Change the Balance
  • Good publicity and improved consumer perception
  • Opportunity to reduce or redirect direct marketing expenses which are offset by initiatives undertaken by Change the Balance
